Trigger warning for loud sounds towards the end of the vid.
This was entirely edited, and was supposed to be exported, in 48fps, not 50. Funny thing is, Premiere simply doesn't allow custom frame rates in its export window, despite supporting it as a sequence setting. I could have exported the Premiere file into After Effects and added the sequence to the render cue, but I couldn't because AE threw me an error every time I tried. That, combined with the legitimately unbelievable amount of bugs and errors and crashes left me feeling so exhausted and numb that I ultimately decided it was worth sacrificing one 25th of a second's worth of timing here and there. If you catch any editing errors, that'd be why. Oh well!!

Fantastic rant, I love it! And you're absolutely right. I love how you underline the intent of the artist. Those who would seek to replace artists with machine learning and AI clearly don't understand what art is for. Replace stuff that people don't want to do, or can't do. But people get joy (and their livelihood) from creating art, and they want to do it. It's one of the things that make us human. I'm no Luddite, and I love using new tools to create my animation. But when it starts to encroach upon the fulfillment that I get from creating, then no thanks! You might argue that this is just interpolation and chill out. But my response to that is just wait, this is just getting started.

AI can easliy replace artists. The trick is: you don't need AI to get as good as human animators. In fact you don't need to change it at all... You just need to convince the masses that what AI produces is better. Simple as that. It worked for decades in music and art.

14:08 wow really smooth animation style, well done:) In all seriousness, yeah, these 60 frame conversions make me feel ill because you know it comes from a place of trying to transfer a narrow lexicon of specification and quality to a medium where the difference in frame rate is *part* of the artistic intent. I’m not saying they have never looked good, but they will never match the intentional use of higher frame rate as a means to convey certain motions, and they completely strip out the variations between them, making the art worse as a result. The example with the 48/12 stuttering illustrated that really well. If I ever go to a friend’s house, they’ll have ‘flow motion’ or whatever it’s called on their TV; it makes everything look like a soap opera, and it’s disgusting. I’ll say that I literally find it hard to watch, but they’ll call me a snob or say they prefer it ‘because it’s in 60fps’. Ugh. I don’t think it’s a battle we’re winning, but I’ll make sure to share this because it’s a good articulation of the sentiment.

I care about what looks more pleasing to my eyes and results in an overall more pleasing entertainment experience. Your complaints are absolutely valid on SOME works because some sources simply don't work well with frame interpolation but some sources undeniably benefit from it. Also, jerky choppy animation never looks good, ever. The animation in Into The Spiderverse looked fucking repulsive and was borderline unwatchable thanks to their pretentious choice of framerate.

“It’s gamers” yeah we do have a habit of worshiping 60fps. Never got that, 30fps is not even bad. I’ve never had a single issue with a game being 30fps, but no people desperately need those frames. It’s mostly PC gamers, ‘cause y’know they can’t stand anything that doesn’t either light up pretty colours, or look like it’s crafted by god himself.

I work in AI and this touched my soul. You...have no idea how many clueless idiots and actual *cons* there are in this field. Shove data in a neural network, don't think about the complexities of what you're doing, and the moment you get even halfway decent results, slam the hype button and shill it for all you're worth. It's intellectually dishonest and disrespectful and I *hate* it, every day. I don't know if it's insecurity or outright fraud but people sure seem reluctant to admit how limited their work is. Like...god, those smeared tweens. That's just basic "did you look at what your network is outputting with your *eyes*" stuff. You don't need to be an animator to see this! All this to say, yeah, you're right! And it's not just animation. The problem goes down into the very terms we use ("intelligence", "learning") and I don't know how to fix it, and not enough people seem to *care* to fix it, and it's a professional disgrace.

I may not be an animator, but I'm a graphite/coal artist. My style of choice I rustic and smudgy. I use thick lines and I love to experiment with lighting and shadows. It's basically like those pictures that look smeary and messy when you stay in front of them and you have to move a few steps back to see the full effect. And suddenly they look absolutely clean. Like you said, the brain fills in the gaps. If somebody would show me an App and say it can "clean up" my pictures, yes, I would feel personally offended. Criticism is always welcome, but that's just an insult.

Christian Protheroe
Christian Protheroe 4 soat oldin
This is just plain wrong around the AI bit. The AI is definitely improving: Its objective is for it to be able to guess frame 2 correctly given 1 and 3, then using the same network to predict frames 1.5 and 2.5. It will "magically" improve ad infinitum given more samples and may learn the rules as a means of prediction. The more popular approaches nowadays can be coached so yes, you could potentially coach it on some of the animation rules.
belziere
belziere 2 soat oldin
Yeah... While the guy has some good points, moslty about why you shouldn't use it, I find his righteous tone and elitist mindset to be counter productive. He doesn't know shit about ai (obviously) else he wouldn't have rambled on it and his blatant booger-throw at gamers is ridicule. Like, OF COURSE 60 or more FPS in a game will look better, real life has no framerate so the more you go into "infinite framerate" territory the more natural it will feel, I get why it wouldn't be so in animation (while the fact that he implies that it would be wrong no matter the project is obviously stupid) but with a good implementation, smoother animation is really nice to look at especially in action packed scenes. Also most low framerate animation looks terrible and feels painful to watch, no matter what the intention was, respect my eyes or fuck off (Refering to lower than cinematic framerate).

See, in certain cases the 60 fps looks okay enough to justify putting it through the slammer. But then you open a whole new can of worms, because like every single video with the 60fps animations didn’t even ask the original creator if they can do that. So they’re literally violating copyright >:(

Dry Bones kisses and bites Bowser and the Minions
Actually when it's much more fast paced animation, it requires less frames to get the motion and movement across! More frames are used with subtle smoother movement with limited frames used only for fast impacts and intense action.
Tyler

11:28 I disagree with this. This particular AI likely won't be able to learn the 12 principles and be able to accurately interpolate drawn images, but with enough data, an AI can learn a lot of human behavior a lot better than we'd expect. If we train it on data that represents the 12 principles, and make sure to use "style transfer" so the AI matches the style of the animation that it's adding frames to, the end result can end up being pretty accurate. Whether or not you find this in good taste is another question. Personally, I haven't found any of these HFR animations to be very compelling, because they're more just a proof of concept right now, but I wouldn't judge this process as any less of an art-form. If someone develops and tweaks an algorithm to interpolate, upscale, and de-interlace their favorite anime, I think they're valid in doing so, and it shouldn't be an insult to the original creators. You may think it looks bad, but it's still art. It's just in the early stages of development.

The fact that alot of people think that higher frame rates are the way to go in animation when in reality the idea flies in the face of basic rules and ideas without taking into consideration that its meant to be presented that way. Higher frame rates are performance based not animation based.

I think core point were missing about AI interpolation, that videos showed in video were made by AI trained not for correct thing. If you train a person for 3D animation, no wonder he will suck at making anime. Same here, if AI would have been trained for animation, taught rules from that book and actually trained to notice animations hidden magics, those points its missing would be added back. Yes, AI is a tool, and it can be AMAZING tool. I think spider man movie is great example, where selective frames speed shows you how it can be used in same shot. Now if AI could recognize it? If some parts become smooth as hell, background changes or something like that, and meanwhile important scenes would get different frame rate. It steals creativity? Correct trained AI would boost creativity amazingly, instead of focusing on technical things that requires grinding and countless hours you could focus on Ideas, story, character design, new unique approaches. Sorry for a rant, but I just wanted to defend AI technology a bit, as it is unfair to say that AI 60 frames per second animation sucks, as it just done not correctly yet, it haven't learned it yet. And if there are rules how to make animations amazing at 24 frames, isn't there a chance that there could be rules at 60 frames as well? Just no-one looked at it yet, as it was super inefficient before, but now with correct AI it could be something else. By the way, I do agree with points made in this video, just at least one positive point still could be nice +D

To be fair, a steak is meant for eating. Sure, you can make it taste as good as heaven itself, but at the end of the day it is designed to be consumed, digested, and turned into shit. The moment the chef puts it on your plate, it's no longer his. You paid to eat the steak. Not to look at it, nor "enjoy it as the chef intended." It's yours. To do with as you please. You can walk into a 5 Star Restaurant, buy the most expensive steak, and immediately ask for a check, and walk outside and give it to a mangy dog. And there is nothing illegal, disrespectful, or otherwise devious or malicious about that. If the chef is offended, maybe he should go to culinary decoration class and become a food stylist. Art like movies, television, theater, video games, paintings, music etc. is a lot different, you are purchasing the privilege of enjoying the content therein, you don't actually own the product itself.

Even as a mostly still aspiring 3D character animator, this speaks to me. Doing the tiny detail and stuff like fingers, specific tween frames, adding bounce to the motion or fake physics so to speak often are my favourite part because they do so much for the shot. It was interesting for example how when working on something with motion styled in the sense like the title "Furi" where motions were very sharp and almost immediate pose to pose for the stylisation, those tiny tweening frames, no matter how few of them there were, became so much more important. With those made automatically (Y'know, the majority of tweening frames in 3D) you get armatures collapsing on themselves, weird oriations of characters and bones, and just a single frame of that shit ruins a motion. Main reason why I like doing pure keyframed animation for 3D over using Dope Sheets or Key Interpolations for smoothing motions or guiding angles and curves comes from this sort of stuff. Sure, it takes time, but it will always give a better result than making an AI do it. This can be said for both personal projects, or major corporations who cut corners from budgets. That comment about gamers reminds me of a time I was on a shitty old cpu, bareily running something. Someone in the team starts bantering about his frames dropping and they're discussing their usual ranges (Like 250-300 kinda numbers) and I just pipe up with "Meanwhile I'm here barely scraping 42 and I'm happy!". They were alright folk who got a pretty good kick out of that.

What a pointless video. You're not stating the difference of higher fps animations. You're making a salty rant about machine learning tools not having any "soul" or creativity -- which is correct, but you're straight up lying about some of the points here, such as using tweening in 6:00 for *both* examples, but making DAIN look like it could've animated the movement for you (while you were just tweening between two keyframes), eventhough you're praising tweening later. DAIN as a tool had zero impact on that example and the only reason why you've shoehorned that in is to make all consecutive points. It's disingenuous, and sad, that you feel like you have to defend your artistic ability like this.

Man Why tf would I care about framerate in animation, Which gamer is so fucking stupid to apply framerate rules for games to animation, like we literally boost frames to see more and act quicker coz we get more visual info, i dont want my anime fight to look like spaghetti coz OoOoOoOoHhHhHh 60 FrAmEs. NO.

Probably the idiots that think that framerate and graphics are what make games play good

I totally agree, but I think the steak was a bad example, we go to restaurants to enjoy the food, that is the purpose of restaurants, if you enjoy steak with ketchup, then go for it, it enhances your experience, with movies, the higher framerate, if not integrated by the creator/creators, then it wont work well in animations, of course until AI becomes better (and it will, the whole point of AI is to improve upon itself)

When I first saw the AI 60 fps thing I thought "Huh, that's neat" but the more I saw the more I realised how much life it drains from the animation. There's this one animator I watch called Aimkid and her animations are some of the best and most fluid as well as entertaining animations ever, but I saw one of those 60fps videos of one of her animations and all the life, whimsy, and impact from the movement was gone. It really sucks

Cause people who aren't animators don't even know to look for that. Just by looking at it things can only ever look smoother to someone like me who doesn't know the differences in animation and all the reasons for the different decisions made. I can respect everything your saying but I wouldn't even know that it looks bad until you slowed it down to show us. Lol.

Hello noodle, I just wanted to say. I love your content. It’s so unique when compared to the rest of the garbage content on this platform and I find it really easy to connect with your type of humour. Keep it up man. You deserve all the attention you’re gonna get.

I have never watched any video (other than maybe tutorials) more than once. Except for this one, I watched it like 5 times by now and I really dunno why ':)

idk man people who love mediocrity are always being rewarded and people who don't are just deleted from existence by poor living conditions and societal judgment. so yea I think AI will take over your, mine and all of our jobs pretty soon and people who care won't be heard of in a couple years

This guy didn't even research what ai interpolation is doing before spending all his time making a video about it, it isn't 'dumb connect the dots', or atleast the good ai isnt, or what ai interpolation is striving towards. I can't believe this vid has so many views, lowest common denominator I guess.

I agree the author's intent matters when it comes to animation. I don't like computer interpolation in animation even if the animator is in control, because while they can tweak it and make it a bit more to their liking, it still doesn't have the same feel as classic frame-by-frame animation where every frame is drawn by hand. And yes, I have seen shows like FIM and many other computer-interpolated graphics shows when I was young, I literally grew up in the 2000s when this was very common, and I now don't like this, though at least it's not as bad as AI interpolation.
